• Your machine must be listed in DNS as one of:
  
  • {something}.aem.umn.edu
    
  • {something}.enet.umn.edu
    
  • {something}.ie.umn.edu
    
  • {something}.me.umn.edu
    
  • {something}.vpn.umn.edu
    
  otherwise you will not be able to access sw-m (the Web server).
  You can check this with the nslookup command.
  (Wireless connections and VPN connections are all registered).

• Run this to connect:
  • Click Start->Run
    
  • then type \\sw-m in the run box.
    
  • Click Ok.
    
  • This should open a connection to sw-m

    if it asks for a username and password,
    the Username is MENET\{your-menet-login-name} and
    the password is {your-menet-windows-password}

  • You will then see a folder called WHOME, this is the windows share of you personal web-page public-html folder (on unix this is:
    /home/webhome-menet/{your-menet-login-name}/public-html/
    A.K.A.
    /home/webhome-menet/$USER/public-html/ )

  • There is also a folder called WWW - this is a share that has roots of the following Web servers under it (access is limited)
    
    • ie
    • ipcs
    • me
    • menet
    • nanoigert

• On MEnet managed machines you can connect
  WHOME as drive w: with:
  Start->Folders->Mount_W.w--

  and
  WWW as drive V: (if you have permission) with:
  Start->Folders->Mount_V.w--

• These are also some of the remarked out items in ME-connect.bat if you wish to use that instead to connect.

Some notes about files you place in your Personal Web Page.

• It is assumed that all files put on the web server are put there to be read by others.

  If you want to use password protected pages - you should use unix and read Password Protecting Web Pages

• All folders Created are listable by default - you can change this with windows security by removing READ permissions for all listed groups (or through unix with chmod go-r folder)

• You cannot make web directories un-accessible through windows (just un-readable which means the contents can't be listed).

• You cannot change the permissions through windows so that everyone cannot read web files

• A more technical description of what you can set through windows (in unix chmod terms - with the defaults listed first):
  • Folders may be only u=rwx or u=rx and g=rx or g=x and o=rx or o=x
  • Files may be only u=rw or u=r and go=r
