computer-registration-instructions.txt Form is available here: http://www.enet.umn.edu/docs/policies/computer-registration/computer-registration-form.txt --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INSTRUCTIONS for: Enet Computer Registration Form --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The FORM MUST be submitted by e-mail to: Enet Support Save the form and use NOTEPAD, TextEdit, VI, or EMACS to edit the file, then attach it to an email to send it to us. - ONLY "ASCII" text forms will be accepted (DOS, UNIX and even old MAC text formats are ok). - DO NOT PASTE the information into an email (it can become very hard to read). - NO WORD, RTF, nor other Document FILES (they ARE NOT ASCII TEXT). - NO PICTURES. you can attach multiple forms to one email message. You must submit a separate form, and Ethernet address list for each machine, All fields are REQUIRED except as noted in the form. Is it University Owned?: Was it purchased on Any Univerisity Budget, or not (ask us if you are unsure). Whose Budget Paid for it?: We want to know Who controls the budget that paid for it, so we know who is ultimately responsible for the machine (besides you). Building and Room Number: (and) Network Jack: Please let us know if a wired network jack is needed or not. Make sure to include the Building Name, as we manage jacks in several buildings (and all of our Departments use rooms in at least two buildings). Machine Name: (Note, Personal Machines will be named by Enet) MACHINE NAMES MUST CONFORM TO enet-{something} (15 characters total - 10 after enet- ), if you don't supply the name this way we will correct it for you. You may wish to list several alternatives in case your preferred name is taken. Acceptable characters are lowercase characters (a-Z), digits (0-9) and the "-" character ( "-" must not be the last character, and we won't allow two in a row). Serial Number: We need the permanent computer hardware Serial Number (not the windows serial number), On Dell computers, this is called the "Service Tag". This is needed to visually identify the computer (so a computer case serial number is preferred to a Motherboard Serial number). ALL Physical (Ethernet Hardware) Address(es): List all Physical (Ethernet Hardware) Addresses. We need the Complete Output of the command that lists the interfaces, attached as an ASCII text file. To get the Physical (Ethernet Hardware) Address(es), see: http://www.enet.umn.edu/docs/policies/computer-registration/computer-ethernet-address.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CLARIFICATIONS: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The "Windows Serial Number" is usually of the form 00000-000-000-000 and is on the Windows Genuine sticker (this is NOT the machine's serial number). - This is not required, but we recommend you send it as proof your machine has a windows license. The "University Inventory ID" (UID) is a number assigned by University Inventory Services for equipment that is considered a capital asset - again it is not required - but we do recommend you include it if it HAS one, as Inventory Services checks with us when they can't find a machine when doing inventory.
