Finding the Physical Address (Ethernet Hardware Address) of Your Machine

Notes:

PLEASE ATTACH this info as an ASCII text file. Please don't paste the text into your message as the formatting gets garbled and hard to read.

Have ALL network cards and drivers installed first.

Make sure any USB and Thunderbolt network devices are connected as well before following this procedure.

• Windows ME, 98, 95:
  
  • Do not connect these machines to the Network.
    open a Command.com, the rest is like Windows 7
  
  
• Windows Vista, XP, 2000, NT:
  
  • These OSes are no longer supported by Microsoft.
    Follow the instructions for Windows 7
  
  
• Windows 10, 8, 7:
  
  • One way to get the hardware ethernet address is to open a
    CMD/Command window (Start->Run "CMD" - or - WindowKey-R "CMD").
    
  • in the CMD/Command window type:

    			ipconfig /all
    		

    Send the ENTIRE OUTPUT (as an attached text file, not a picture) to Enet (enet@enet.umn.edu) .
    
    
  • To save it to a file:
    in the CMD/Command window type these TWO commands:

    			ipconfig /all > %TMP%\junk.txt
    			%TMP%\junk.txt
    		

    This should open the file in notepad (with all the information in it).
    
    "junk.txt" is a text file you can attach to the e-mail you send back to Enet (enet@enet.umn.edu) .
    (note: In an attachment GUI, you can literally open the file as: %TMP%\junk.txt )
    Please check the file to make sure the Hardware Ethernet Address for the network card is listed.
    SEND THE COMPLETE FILE, UN-EDITED.
  
  
  
  
• MacOS Classic (9 series and earlier):
  
  • Do not connect these machines to the Network.
  
  
• MacOS X (10.0 and later):
  
  • Under UTILITIES start the Terminal App.
    in the terminal app run:
    

    			/sbin/ifconfig -a
    		

    To create a junk.txt file you can attach:

    			/sbin/ifconfig -a > junk.txt
    		

    Send the ENTIRE OUTPUT, UN-EDITED (text, not a picture) to Enet (enet@enet.umn.edu) .
  
  
• Linux/Unix:
  
  • start a Terminal Window.
    in the Terminal Window run:
    

    			ip address
    		

    To create a junk.txt file you can attach:

    			ip address > junk.txt
    		

    Send the ENTIRE OUTPUT, UN-EDITED (text, not a picture) to Enet (enet@enet.umn.edu) .
    
    
  • Note: if your linux machine does not have the ip command use:

    			/sbin/ifconfig -a > junk.txt
